Jeff Smith
President
Jeff has over 30 years of experience in business operations bringing with him the dedication and foresight to develop a management strategy second to none. Prior to joining Smith-Root, Inc., Jeff successfully orchestrated the start-up and marketing of four companies. With his background as a design consultant in civil and structural engineering he saw the potential in fish barriers and was invited to join SRI as Vice President/General Manager of Operations to spearhead the division. As President, Jeff is responsible for Smith-Root, Inc.'s operations including financial, strategic planning and development.

Lee Carstensen
Vice President, Electrical Engineering
As Vice President of Engineering, Lee plays an integral role in strategic planning, product development and manufacturing, equipment standards and customer relations. For over 25 years Lee has been intimately involved with every product Smith-Root, Inc. has developed. Through his accomplishments, Lee has transitioned through the company from electronics technician, engineer, engineering manager, to his current position as Vice President of Engineering. Prior to joining SRI, Lee served in the Navy were he gained extensive training in radio communication systems and nuclear power plants. After receiving his formal education in Electronic Engineering from the Cleveland Institute of Electronics he worked as a licensed electrician on electric power systems.

Kerry Smith
Vice President, Technical Support
Kerry is a long-time employee of Smith-Root, Inc. He has worked in all phases of the company including, fabrication and production, electrofisher and boat testing, small engine and generator repairs, computer programming, computer hardware installation and as Manager of Purchasing. He has over 20 years experience in Electrofishing. Currently, he is involved with Fish Barrier Field Service, Boat Field Repair Clinics and Telephone Support. Kerry is constantly on the move fulfilling customer needs.

Lisa S. Harlan
Biologist/Scientist
Lisa joined our team in December 2005 with over fourteen years experience in Fish Biology. She has worked with fellow biologists from various public and private agencies in the Northwestern United States conducting a wide-range of studies collecting data, estimating populations of native and hatchery salmonids in the Columbia River and it’s tributaries. She is experienced in stream surveys, electrofishing techniques, snorkel surveys and seining as tools for estimating fish populations, fish injury and research. Her department welcomes the opportunity to discuss and consult on fisheries issues as well as continue to offer electrofishing training courses. She received a BS in Biology from Principia College, Illinois.

Barbara Stern
Vice President, Sales and Project Management
Barbara joined Smith-Root, Inc. over 15 years ago with experience in business applications and techniques. She currently oversees International and U.S sales, boat and equipment repairs, distributorship guidelines and procedures. With Barbara's innovative aptitude and skills she developed and facilitated our current bidding and proposal process by implementing it to an online system making it a more efficient and cost effective process. Barbara is proactive in troubleshooting systems and modifying them to operate more effectively. Her talents and contributions to SRI have made her a true asset to the company.

Katherine Harper
Operations Manager
Katherine has over 25 years experience in business management, mergers and acquisitions. Prior to joining Smith-Root, she was involved hands on with the transformation of a brick-and-mortar company to an online shopping store featured by the Harvard College of Business. Katherine has been instrumental in the development and implementation of office policy/procedures to transform Smith-Root to a multilevel corporation. With her combined intensive background in the educational areas of business and marketing along with her forward thinking she is constantly on the move to improve services and lessen costs.

John Parkin
Parkin Engineering is now a member of the Smith-Root family. It brings to Smith-Root an experienced team of structural engineers who have been designing in wood-frame, masonry, concrete, steel and aluminum, including bridges, commercial, industrial and residential structures. Parkin Engineering is continuing to serve its clients in these fields, but is expanding into fisheries and other areas of interest to Smith-Root clients. John Parkin has operated his structural engineering consulting business in Clark County for over 20 years. Before that, he was the project manager for VSL Corporation, a post-tensioning contractor, on the Glenn Jackson Bridge. He graduated in 1964 from the University of Adelaide, South Australia, and in 1966 from the University of Washington, Seattle.

John McAllister
Vice President, Mechanical Engineering
With years of experience and training Jon is considered our resident boat and equipment designer. Prior to joining Smith-Root, Inc. stationed aboard the USS Lexington he supervised a repair shop and also taught Advanced Sheet Metal Layout. After ending his military career he worked for Avtech Corporation supervising photo fabrication where he met our company founder Dave Smith. While and after leaving Avtech Corporation Jon was reunited with Dave Smith and asked to join SRI forming a professional relationship lasting over 35 years. Jon has become a company icon epitomizing quality craftsmanship in boat design and product development.

Carl Burger
Senior Scientist
Carl has over thirty years of experience as a fisheries research biologist with a focus on population ecology, genetics and life history requirements of salmonid fishes. Carl is the SRI Biology Department Lead and serves as the liaison between Smith-Root, government agencies and private industries. Carl also specializes in securing funding for research and development projects. Carl is a Past President of the American Fisheries Society who has served the Society in numerous leadership positions at all levels. In his previous work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service he oversaw ecosystem-level research from Alaska to Washington to Maine, with a focus on hatchery/wild interactions and restoration/recovery strategies for listed species. Carl holds an M.S. in Fisheries from Oregon State University and a B.S. in Biology (emphasis marine science) from Northeastern University in Boston.

F. Michael Holliman, Ph.D.
Research Biologist
Dr. Michael Holliman joins our fast-growing Biology Department with a wide range of expertise and experience. Michael’s duties are centered on writing proposals, electrofishing research, the development of new products for SRI, technical support for all departments, and publishing of reports. His background is vast and includes fisheries, principles and techniques of electrofishing, electrofishing efficiency, electroanesthesia and fish injury, which contributes to all aspects of Smith-Root’s focus on fisheries conservation.
Among his accomplishments, Michael has achieved a Ph.D. in Fisheries, M.S. in Zoology, B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences, A.A.S. in Electronics Technology, and a A.A.S. in Radiologic Technology.

Curtis Kirkham
Controller
Curtis joins Smith-Root, Inc. with over 7 years of experience in finance and accounting. His strategic planning methods continuously strengthen the overall financial position of the company. Curtis reformed SRI's accounting system by implementing cost containment methods to achieve a more efficient and productive financial structure. Prior to joining SRI, Curtis was the Controller at Premium Brands Distributing where he was involved in streamlining accounting functions and cash flow operations. He has enjoyed great academic success abroad in Spain, as well as in Utah where he received his BA in Finance.

Rick Crump
Production Engineer
Rick brings extensive technical experience to Smith-Root, Inc. His troubleshooting capabilities in quality control and technical support contribute to SRI's customer success rate. Rick continuously plays an instrumental role in the collaboration and facilitation of product testing and development to meet and achieve ETL/UL certification requirements and standards. Prior to working at SRI, Rick designed and developed a production facility for Western Hearing. He received his BS in Electronics Engineering from Portland State University.

Debbie Scott
Canadian Branch Manager
Debbie Scott, Canadian born, has experience in the environmental field, primarily dealing with fishery issues and researcher needs. With Debbie's background, she was a natural choice for Smith-Root, Inc. to recruit for opening and managing our Canadian office. Debbie's knowledge of SRI equipment and environmental issues has been instrumental in developing ongoing working relationships with many agencies and researchers across Canada. She has been pro-active in preserving researcher's rights and abilities to continue using collection tools that are coming under more governmental control. Debbie prides herself in meeting the expectations of her customers by providing the highest level of service possible through order processing, product research, and by arranging boat clinics and electrofishing classes in Canada.
