Barrier Site: Lake Seminole
Lake Seminole

Location: Chattahoochee, Florida

Year: 1998

Barrier Type: Steel cable electrodes mounted above lake bottom in boat passage channels.

Pulsators: 1ea. - 1.5KVA POW

Status: The fish barrier is used to contain planted sterile grass carp. The fish were planted to control invasive vegetation in the shallow lake. The electric barrier is used in combination with a fence. Motion sensors detect boats approaching the fish barrier and the barrier automatically turns off. The barrier will automatically reactivate once the boat exits the boat passage channel. The use of Grass Carp contained by the Smith-Root electric fish barrier has proven to be a very cost effective method of managing the vegetation.

This highly effective barrier was featured in the Winter 1999 issue of "Highlights of Agricultural Research". Read the article here.
