Sustainability Statement
Product Stewardship means that all who make, distribute, use and dispose of products share responsibility for reducing the environmental impact of those products.
Founded in 1964, Smith-Root has grown to become a respected member of the aquatic resource conservation community. By providing fish researchers, managers, and hatchery personnel with quality fisheries sampling technologies we have cemented an enduring relationship with the conservation community.
This relationship with our many external stakeholders who depend on us to provide the tools they need to preserve and protect our fisheries resources serves as our inspiration to act as responsible corporate citizens in every manner we can.
Our sustainability plan focuses on providing the best outcome for our environment now… and into the future. As a manufacturer of durable goods, we feel the best way to achieve this outcome is through focusing our attention on product stewardship.
To reduce the environmental impact of our products…
- We provide $500 trade-in discount for any electrofisher, working or not, regardless of original manufacturer.
- We use computer aided manufacturing processes to reduce scrap material.
- We continually seek environmentally friendly components for use in our products.
- We implemented a robust recycling program preventing recyclables from ending up in landfills.
- We promote carpooling by employees, and also encourage alternative methods of travel (bicycling & walking).
- We incorporate lean manufacturing processes, diminishing excess inventory.
- We use electronic forms of communication with vendors, customers, offshore offices and distributors. This not only includes email but also teleconferencing and invoice dissemination.
- We are committed to continually moving toward a company-wide zero landfill waste policy.

Power Standardization System
Smith-Root’s biology and engineering departments have created a prototype Power Standardization System with the hopes of giving users of all Smith-Root electrofishing systems the ability to standardize their effective output.
Standardization of power output for boat electrofishing aids in acquiring consistent stock assessment data comparable over time and locations by allowing fishing according to power output as opposed to equipment settings. Variability in water conditions can also make it difficult to determine correct output settings, so the ability to standardize output will allow the same amount of power to be transferred to fish disregarding the environmental conditions.
Smith-Root will be showcasing this new research tool at Seattle AFS in early September and plan to offer for sale shortly thereafter.
If you are interested in purchasing or would like to receive more information concerning this valuable research tool please leave your name and contact info and a Smith-Root employee will contact as more information becomes available.

E-Model Electrofishing Boats
E-Model Boats.EH-Model Electrofishing Boats
Features
Boat Hull
Smith-Root custom-built EH-Model hulls are constructed of rugged aluminum that gives superior impact strength and excellent resistance to water and weather corrosion. The hulls features all-welded seams and a formed chine that overlays the double welded bottom seams. Transoms are designed and built to resist damage that can happen in or out of the water. Closed-cell spray-in flotation is installed along both sides, with ample flotation placed below the deck line. This extra flotation is provided so that a fully equipped electrofishing boat will float approximately level in the unlikely event of flooding.
GPP Electrofisher with Kohler Powered Generator
Smith-Root EH-Model electrofishing boats feature a 5.0, 7.5, or 9.0 GPP Electrofisher that is fully integrated into the Steering & Control Console. The GPP electrofisher is powered by a U.S. Coast Guard and 2011 EPA certified marine grade Kohler generator that is custom-wound with insulated high voltage windings able to deliver maximum power into the water. Additional heavy-duty windings provide 12 volt power for battery charging and auxiliary lighting. The generator is cooled by water pumped in through a screened intake in the bottom of the boat hull. A heat reflective and sound deadening engine housing surrounds and quiets the generator. Generator is accessible through a hinged lid that when closed acts as a mount for the boat operator's adjustable seat.
Electrofisher Booms & Arrays
Insulated booms and removable electrode arrays are mounted at each corner of the bow on rotating clutches. Boom elevation and spread can be adjusted to best suit the waterway being fished. In the event of an impact, the clutches allow for horizontal slippage. Standard electrode arrays are medium-duty SAA-6 arrays featuring six stainless steel electrode droppers. The SAA-6 droppers can be adjusted from twelve to thirty-six inches in diameter. Brass quick connect fittings allow for easy connection and removal of electrode arrays.
Cathode Array
A cathode array provides better loading in low conductivity water and a less intense field at each electrode. Cathode array is electrically isolated from boat hull on H-Models.
Fish Livewell
Designed to reduce fish stress and accommodate high fish density, the livewell features a high volume fresh water pump that intakes through a screened opening in the bottom hull and provides constant circulation. Additional aeration is provided by a secondary pump and water circulating system with a aerating dome. This feature allows transporting fish when the boat is out of water and can be used to add extra oxygen to the tank when high fish-density occurs. The livewell has full interior lighting for night operations and reinforced lids that fold flush with the tank sides.
Steering & Control Console
Electrofisher and boat operator controls are integrated into a center console. The console also contains a patch panel allowing complete selection of anode/cathode boom configurations. Console hinges forward to provide easy access to all steering controls, switches, circuit breakers, and wiring terminals for the entire electrical system.
Battery Charging & Storage
Battery power is provided by two marine batteries charged by the Kohler generator. Additionally, the outboard motor has an independent battery that is charged by the outboard motor. Batteries are isolated to help prevent damage to the system. An integrated battery storage compartment stores up to two batteries and provides additional storage for small items.
Lights
Complete system of lights for navigation and safety. Featuring:
- Halogen head lights
- LED Navigation lights
- Pre-aimed work lights
- LED Deck lights
- Stern flood lights
Onboard Fuel Tanks
Built-in tank provides gas for both the outboard motor and the Kohler generator. The fuel system has a marine water separator/filter with a replaceable cartridge and shut-off valves. Fittings at the fuel filter facilitate using standard six gallon marine gas tanks to supplement the main fuel tanks.
Work Deck
The bow work deck provides a roomy and safe working area for electrofishing. The deck is below the gunwale top to give a lower center of gravity and the work area is large enough for several people to work comfortably. The work surface is a dri-deck mat for stable footing and a sturdy railing surrounds the work deck on three sides. Foot switches to control the electrofisher output are built-in. A receptacle is provided for additional foot switches to accommodate extra crew. Underneath the work deck is a large, dry storage compartment with locking marine doors.

H-Model Electrofishing Boats
Features
Boat Hull
Smith-Root custom-built H-Model hulls are constructed of rugged aluminum that gives superior impact strength and excellent resistance to water and weather corrosion. The hulls features all-welded seams with hard machine-rivets at all critical rib support points and formed chine that overlays the double welded bottom seams.
